Since 2005, IT for Change\u2019s field centre,\u00a0Prakriye<\/em>, has been working to empower the women in H.D. Kote and Hunsur districts of Mysore. Prakriye<\/em>\u2019s team has been implementing localized information communication technology (ICT) solutions to support the women\u2019s sanghas in the different villages that were under the wing of the\u00a0Mahila Samakhya<\/span><\/em>\u00a0program\u00a0<\/span>by<\/span> the Department of Education.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The work in this area has enabled the residents of the village to get access to details and benefits of welfare schemes and entitlements provided for by the State through the ICT enabled information centers that were set up in accessible areas.<\/span><\/p>

While IT for Change has always worked for the overall benefit of the residents of the villages, the focus of our interventions has particularly been on women\u2019s collectives, elected women\u2019s representatives and adolescent girls. The ideas of critical learning, women\u2019s rights and gender justice were imparted to women through the various interactions between the Mysore team, and the girls and women. They discussed education for girls, campaigns against child marriage and challenges against gender and caste discrimination with the girls and the women.<\/span><\/p>

However, the\u00a0Mahila Samakhya<\/span><\/em>\u00a0program\u00a0<\/span>shut <\/span>in 2014 <\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0the <\/span>community\u2019s <\/span>overall\u00a0investment in\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0learning processes declined.\u00a0Lack of staff support\u00a0and resources\u00a0led to a situation where\u00a0women\u00a0were denied real choices to seek redressal<\/span>\u00a0against\u00a0the gender-based violence faced by them\u00a0either in public or in private.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Additionally, women were reluctant to seek help from\u00a0the existing structures established under the Protection against Domestic Violence Act, 2005\u00a0either because they\u00a0<\/span>would be<\/span>\u00a0forced by <\/span>the<\/span> authorities to resort to legal methods to resolve the problem\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>they <\/span>want<\/span>ed<\/span> to avoid getting entangled in additional problems <\/span>of the <\/span>judicial system or\u00a0the\u00a0financial and emotional burden <\/span>that came with it.<\/span><\/span><\/h3>

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In these circumstances, w<\/span>omen <\/span>had <\/span>privately approached the\u00a0<\/span>Prakriye<\/span><\/em>\u00a0team to seek support against the domestic violence faced by them.\u00a0This<\/span>\u00a0made us <\/span>realize<\/span> that for every woman who raises <\/span>an<\/span> issue, that there are many who do not.\u00a0Violence is not just an interpersonal issue —<\/span>\u00a0it is a deep-seated structural\u00a0and\u00a0patriarchal<\/span>\u00a0problem\u00a0that has led to the normalization of violence against women and girls.\u00a0The silence around the issue by women\u00a0is due to their implied understanding of their subordinate status in society. Keeping all these factors in mind, we decided to launch the\u00a0<\/span>Namma Maathu, Namma Jaaga<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>project.<\/span><\/span><\/p>

Literally translated, the project name means \u2018Our discourse, our space\u2019. What we intend to do through the course of the project implementation is to provide women a\u00a0platform to voice their problems, and provide them with psycho-social counseling assistance, as well as links to legal aid if they\u00a0opt for the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

We intend to make the women challenge the existing social norms, beliefs,\u00a0and\u00a0attitudes that treat women as inferior.\u00a0In addition to this, <\/span>the project will attempt to make<\/span> men take equal responsibility\u00a0by recognizing and eliminating male prejudice. <\/span>W<\/span>e want to work towards breaking the silence surrounding gender-based violence\u00a0and towards the establishment of a gender equal society.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
