Madhav Nair is one of the 7th semester students at Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology. He shares some reflections about his practice and how does his work contribute to the context of the project.
Most of my work revolves around visual storytelling; having found a deep interest in mediums like comics, illustrations and paintings. My work has also taken me into the realm of public art and public space interventions, such as self-published zines and murals. These projects have given me an in-depth understanding of what is considered as a public work of art and the difference between an intervention and an installation. I also relate to design solutions that are open and free to be remixed and re-contextualized, solutions that can be pried open and experimented with.
I have a strong feeling that all of this knowledge will be really useful in this particular project because it would be a more productive approach if I try to create an open environment for the girls to be involved in making their own artifacts and interventions, while responding to their physical and emotional state of being, and portraying the relationship they have to their surroundings.
The process of self-publishing is, in my opinion, the easiest way for someone to really understand what it means to be autonomous and take control of the entire process of creation, from idea to final product. Therefore I’ve realized that this is the path to create a module that encourages self-expression and autonomy in this project, and also to put together a creative process that can be interpreted and extrapolated into the personal decision-making of Kishoris.
